Troop 75013 of Lake Wales, Florida aimed to promote confidence and normalcy regarding the topic of menstruation within their local middle schools. In their middle school, menstrual products and the advice about where to find them when needed was not readily available. Working with a variety of community partners, the Troop created a bag of resources (sanitary pads and moist wipes) that a girl could use to make it through a tough day of getting her menstrual cycle and not being prepared. Included in the bags and in the restrooms, was a QR code that linked to a video they created about teen menstruation.
“It mattered to us because we've been there and had this problem,” the Girl Scouts explained. “We've had the feeling of not being prepared and having to think, oh no what do I do now? Will I make it through the day until I get home? It's a distraction that we shouldn't have had to suffer through because we didn't know where to turn and we were too shy to ask. It's a topic that is whispered and awkward. We want to let girls know where to find these resources and not be afraid to ask for them.”
