Prerequisite: Must have completed GSWCF Small Craft Safety Training or other council equivalent

Learn how to safely operate a canoe, kayak and stand-up paddle board and be qualified to facilitate Girl Scout outings on Class 1 rivers. Participants will be required to demonstrate their skills in-water as well as take a written test to pass this course.

This eight-hour course will train participants with content equivalent to ACA Essentials of River Canoe, Kayak and SUP and DOES NOT INCLUDE WATERCRAFT RENTAL. It will have three hours of classroom/land-based instruction and workshops/on-water training and skill development & assessment. With an additional two hours for on-water testing. Participants will need to pass a skills test and demonstrate the developed skills to pass the course. When the participants pass, they will be ready to facilitate outings with girls in class one rivers.

If participants do not pass either portion (classroom and/or skill demonstration), there will be additional fees for re-instruction/re-test. Retest classroom portion ($40); retest skills demo ($40); Dates to be determined at class, as needed. If the participant is not able to pass both parts, the participant will need to re-take the course with no discount.

Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC): The course is open to all individuals who acknowledge the ability to perform the following essential eligibility criteria:
1. Breathe independently (i.e., not require medical devices to sustain breathing)
2. Independently maintain sealed airway passages while underwater
3. Independently hold head upright without neck/head support
4. Manage personal care independently or with the assistance of a companion
5. Manage personal mobility independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance
6. Follow instructions and effectively communicate independently or with the assistance of a companion
7. Independently turn from face-down to face-up and remain floating face-up while wearing a properly fitted life jacket
8. Get on/off or in/out of a paddle craft independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance
9. Independently get out and from under a capsized paddle craft
10. Remount or reenter the paddle craft following deep water capsize independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance
11. Maintain a safe body position while attempting skills, activities, and rescues listed

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the critical components of trip planning, including how to prepare their equipment and craft for a safe departure and return.
  • Understand strategies for having a fun and safe day on the water.
  • Understand the fundamentals needed for effective strokes including stroke timing, parts of the paddle, paddle shaft angle, and blade placement in the water.
  • Perform maneuvers efficiently and effectively to control their craft.
  • Understand basic river hydrology and be able to identify different river features and hazards.
  • Understand and be able to demonstrate dynamic maneuvers in the course venue.
  • Understand the handling of common emergency situations on the water.


Completion of this training does not guarantee automatic approval or certification. This course is designed to prepare volunteers to lead Girl Scout programming independently and responsibly. To be approved, participants must demonstrate the learning objectives above and be able to apply it to real-life situations when appropriate. Final approval is at the discretion of the trainer, based on the participant's engagement, preparedness, and ability to meet the standards required to ensure girl safety and uphold Girl Scout values.

*      Refund requests received on or after  7/5/2026   will not be eligible for a refund, except in extenuating circumstances on a case-by-case request.
