This training is a two-part blended learning course. Registered participants will receive access to the 6-hour online pre-requisite course from the trainer, two weeks from the training date. Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the characteristics, responsibilities, and legal considerations of a professional lifeguard, including how to work effectively as part of a safety team and with facility management to ensure patron safety.
  • Identify drowning processes, victim behaviors (swimmer, distressed swimmer, active/passive victims), and effective surveillance techniques, including scanning strategies, surveillance zones, and communication methods for preventing incidents.
  • Explain how lifeguards respond to facility hazards and environmental conditions, such as weather-related safety concerns, and apply appropriate safety measures.
  • Demonstrate the ability to activate and implement an Emergency Action Plan (EAP), perform secondary assessments, and provide care for poisoning, heat-related illnesses, cold-related emergencies, and other first aid situations.
  • Identify causes, signs, and symptoms of head, neck, and spinal injuries on land and in water, and demonstrate appropriate rescue, stabilization, and extrication techniques in both shallow and deep water.
  • Demonstrate in-water ventilations, head-hold escapes, quick extrications, and the rescue of both active victims and submerged passive victims in deep water, followed by appropriate care.

In-Person Participation Requirements
