The Thirteenth GSWCF Annual Meeting (Recap)

IMG_9195

On Saturday, April 25, Girl Scouts of West Central Florida held its Thirteenth Annual Meeting, but this year it was a little different. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic making this annual gathering to celebrate the recent Girl Scout year impossible to do in person, we went virtual.

The event was held on Zoom and, though we missed all being together in person, it was still great to connect with everyone, see their faces on the screen and read all the encouraging comments and thoughtful questions in the chat box. We wouldn’t to do this every year, but were certainly glad we could make it happen during these trying times.

As we do every year, we conducted some important governance business, elected and installed our new slate of Board leadership, offered well wishes to our outgoing Board members and celebrated the successes of the past year while looking ahead at what is to come. We had more than 250 total attendees with voting members from representing 34 service units.

Board president Laura Webb led the meeting which opened with Girl Scout Senior Lindsey performing a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and Girl Scout Promise. We followed this with reports on council business, votes on amendments to our bylaws, the election and installation of new members of our Board, Board Development Committee, and National Council Delegates and Alternates and, lastly, our rededication ceremony courtesy of board members Vinnie Vaughn and Gwin Londrigan, and our outgoing girl members of the board of directors Jenna and Chrissy.

Once the main business of the meeting was conducted, Laura was joined by our new CEO, Mary Pat King, to look back at the membership year that ended on September 30, 2019 through the lens of our five strategic focus areas. This reporting also took time to assess where we are today and, in some cases, a look ahead to where we hope to be in the coming membership year. Laura and Mary Pat were joined by Troop Leader and Daisy’s Circle member, Christa Epley Broderick, who talked about her transformative experience as a Girl Scout leader and the importance of giving back to support even more girls in Girl Scouts.

Every year has its challenges, and the past two months have been unprecedented in their upheaval, but it’s a true testament to the Girl Scout spirit that even in trying times, we are still moving forward and staying focused on delivering on our mission to girls. This was highlighted wonderfully by our special guest, GSUSA National Board member, Ráchel Roché Walton. Ráchel joined us to offer some words of encouragement and to highlight the work of women who are leading the way and embracing new ways of delivering Girl Scouts or supporting their communities during this pandemic.

We ended the day by honoring then retiring members of our Area Associations, Board Development Committee and Board of directors before offering special recognition to those service units who had 100% delegate participation.

Though we hope next year brings us back together in the same room for Annual Meeting, it’s nice to know that there is always a virtual place for us to gather when needed.

You can watch a recording of the Annual Meeting here, please note it is a large file and may take some time to load. Below are full details on amendments, elections, retirings and service unit recognition.
