Guest Blogger: Breanna W., Girl Scout Ambassador
Hi! My name is Breana and I am a first year Girl Scout Ambassador. Aside from Girl Scouts, I also love being outdoors and running. I run for my high school’s cross country team.
Usually when I tell people that I run, their first question is always “why?” Running is a great way to get outside for some fresh air, clear your head, and get exercise; and the best part is that it can be done anywhere and almost everyone can do it!
Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF) offers a great opportunity to do this in the council’s annual Thin Mint Sprint (5k) and Tagalong Trot (1 mile). The money raised goes to helping girls grow in confidence and character. Anyone can participate in the Thin Mint Sprint and Tagalong Trot. They can also choose to take on the Samoa Challenge by running both races!
I have run the Thin Mint Sprint twice. To train, I have been running an average of 22 miles a week with two rest days, one of which is focused on strength and core workouts. Time trials are another great way to train because they allow you to set new goals for yourself and they give you an idea on your pace. A great way to do this is by running other races or even running on your own. I will be participating in the Samoa Challenge this year.
In the previous years that I have run the Thin Mint Sprint, I have always had such an amazing experience! What I love about it is the race day environment. Everyone in the running community is so friendly and so pumped to be running, that it all rubs off onto you!
If you participate you’ll receive a racer’s bib, a T-shirt, and a finisher’s medal (if you register before Nov. 15 and select to receive one). The in-person event will take place on Jan. 9, 2021 in Safety Harbor* and the virtual event can be done anytime, anywhere from Jan. 9-Jan. 31, 2021.
I participate in this event to challenge myself and push myself to run my best time yet. I encourage others to participate because it is a fun family-friendly event that allows you to get outside all while supporting the Girl Scout mission. You can learn more about this event and register by visiting thinmintsprint.org. I hope to see you and your family and friends at the starting line!
You must register before Nov. 15 to recieve a medal - that's just ONE week away! Race packets (race bib, T-shirt, and medal, if applicable) for either the virtual or live event will be available for pick up before Jan. 9, 2021 at multiple locations (TBD) or can be shipped directly (fees apply). Register Now!
