Call for Nominations – 2010 Women of Distinction
Do you know a woman who exemplifies extraordinary civic, professional and/or philanthropic commitment and achievement through gifts of time, talent and treasure, making her community a better place? Is she is a positive role model for girls? Does she demonstrate a commitment to the advocacy of improving the lives of women and/or girls?

Visit www.gswcf.org to download a nomination form; all nominations are due Monday, Nov. 30. Those selected as a 2010 Woman of Distinction will be honored at a luncheon Tuesday, March 23 at A La Carte Pavilion in Tampa.

To be considered, Women of Distinction nominees must live within Girl Scouts of West Central Florida’s geographic boundaries (Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Marion, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sumter counties); nominees are not required to have been Girl Scouts.

The Women of Distinction Selection Committee will review the nominations received on or before Nov. 30 and make their decisions.

The ninth annual Women of Distinction luncheon on March 23, 2010 – an event that honors women who have achieved success in their chosen fields and who serve as role models for girls and young women – benefits Girl Scouts of West Central Florida.

For more information about nominations or the luncheon, please contact Kim Chavez: (813) 262-1792.

Be Featured in Justine Magazine
Girl Scouts everywhere are encouraged to tell the world how they are Remarkable, Energetic, Aspirational Leaders by entering the Justine R.E.A.L. Girl contest where the prize is a feature in the national teen/tween lifestyle magazine, Justine.

This R.E.A.L. Girl Contest is open only to Girl Scouts between the ages of 13-19, who are working to make the world a better place in their local communities and beyond. The winner will be featured in an article telling all about her activities as the R.E.A.L. Girl, and she will win a trip to the Justine offices in Memphis, Tenn., for a professional photo shoot, as well as other fun prizes and Justine subscriptions for her troop and her school library.

For more information and contest rules, check out: justinemagazine.com. Submissions must be made directly on the website, and will be accepted until mid-January 2010; the finalists and winner will be selected in February.

Please note that while GSUSA has some say in the final selection, GSUSA is not involved in examining every submission. Therefore, GSUSA has little influence until the finalists are chosen by the editorial staff of Justine

The Girl Scout Commemorative Coin Passes Legislation!
The U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate have passed the Girl Scouts USA Commemorative Coin Act. The bill now goes to President Obama for his signature, and may possibly become law by the time you read this. This victory would not have been possible without the efforts of thousands of Girl Scout supporters—girls, alumnae, volunteers, parents, staff, board members and friends who wrote, e-mailed and called their members of Congress. In fact, more than 40,000 messages were sent from Girl Scouts all over the nation. What an amazing tribute to the impact Girl Scouting has had on its 50 million past and current members.

The Girl Scouts Centennial Commemorative Coin will be minted in 2013, marking the end of the celebration of our first 100 years and the beginning of our second century of leadership. Proceeds from the sale of the coin will be used for critically needed restoration and improvements to the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace. This investment will protect this national treasure and ensure it continues to inspire and benefit current and future Girl Scouts for years to come.

Your Purchase of Dove Products Can Help Girl Scouts
In conjunction with  its partnership with Dove, GSUSA is launching a new campaign to continue communicating the importance of building positive self-esteem in girls, and you can help!

The purpose of the campaign, entitled, “Thank You for Making a Difference,” is to show the positive effects self-esteem programs have on girls, and to thank consumers for making a difference. Dove is partnering in the campaign with three charitable organizations who have programs designed to build and support girls’ self-esteem—Girl Scouts of the USA, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and Girls Inc.

Girl Scouts of the USA and the uniquely ME! program will be featured on www.Dove.com, and Dove will celebrate individuals who are getting involved and making a difference for girls.

Dove is running a special promotion this in which anyone who buys Dove products can have $1 from her purchase donated to one of the three partner organizations.

To participate, when you buy Dove products, go to www.dove.com, indicate the Dove product purchased via UPC code, and select the charity to receive the donation – choose Girl Scouts! All donations directed to GSUSA will go toward funding additional uniquely ME! programs at the council level. You have until Dec. 15, 2009 to donate to the charity of your choice.
