PROGRAM NEWS

GS Express is a monthly e-newsletter to provide timely news and updates about programs, events, registration and other issues pertinent to girl and adult members as well as staff in a Web-friendly format. In being Web-friendly, the content of GS Express will link from the e-newsletter to additional information/expanded articles on the GSWCF website. GS Express is e-mailed to volunteers, girls, parents, adult members and staff.

The primary method of distribution is e-mail, and the print version has been phased out effective July 2008. It is imperative that everyone in the GSWCF community updates her/his e-mail addresses or signs up to receive the e-newsletter via the newsroom on www.gswcf.org. Please communicate the importance of updating e-mail addresses and subscribing to GS Express to your troop leaders, volunteers and parents. E-mail addresses can be updated and paper copies are available for print by visiting http://www.gswcf.org/news-room/news-pubs.aspx.

The New Girl Scout Leadership Experience is:

• The new design for what girls do in Girl Scouts
• Set to launch in fall 2008 with full implementation by 2010
• Based on the three keys to leadership: Discover, Connect, and Take Action
• Girl-led, based on “learning by doing” and “cooperative learning”
• Serving the Girl Scout mission of building “girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place”

Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Travelship Grant

The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace is offering approximately 20 travelship grants of up to $500 to support travel needs of Girl Scout troops and groups that have reserved a Girl Scout Heritage Visit this summer. Funds will be granted to Girl Scout councils for distribution to traveling troops to offset costs for travel expenses (i.e. to cover the unanticipated increases in gasoline costs, etc.) or to support one or more girls from a troop who are experiencing difficulty in raising the necessary travel funds. Special consideration will be given to troops impacted by unbudgeted increases in gasoline, food and other costs associated with travel and also for groups including members from underserved populations.

Troops must submit an application letter outlining their needs, a travel budget and an appropriate request for funding. Letters should be mailed to the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, 10 East Oglethorpe Ave. Savannah, GA 31401 to the Program Manager. One month after the trip is completed, the funded troop/group must submit a trip report to the Birthplace, post a trip report on its council website and later in the year complete a service project for its home council.

The Birthplace Travelship grants for summer 2008, meeting the requirements, will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. In general, grant awards will be limited to one per council.

These grants are made possible through the Birthplace Travelship Endowment established in 2001. The fund was created to support troop travel to the Juliette Low Birthplace and established with major gifts from the Hodge Foundation of Savannah, an anonymous Florida Foundation, and Birthplace Circle of Friends contributors. Individuals interested in supporting the Birthplace Travelship endowment with a gift of their own are encouraged to contact the Birthplace about giving opportunities.

“Know How to Go” and “100 Best”

This summer, students from the USF Collaborative for Children, Families and Communities’ undergraduate research internship in positive youth development will present two education programs for youth and teens in Hillsborough County.

The first, “Know How to Go,” informs young people about the process of preparing for college, and about strategies that can help them become better candidates for college.
The second is the “100 Best” program. Tampa was named one of the top 100 cities in the country for youth in 2008. The purpose of this presentation is to give the youth in Tampa an opportunity to voice their opinions about what makes Tampa a good place for young people, and what things could make it even better.

Presentations are scheduled for Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and last about 90 minutes each; they can be scheduled for your troop through Thursday, July 24.

For more information about “Know How to Go” and “100 Best,” please contact Tiffany White: (813) 974-7318.
