Earlier this year, Girl Scouts of West Central Florida hosted its first ever Science Fair! Local young innovators from around the council came to the GSWCF Leadership Center displayed their projects. Many girls used this as an opportunity to show off their school projects and get feedback.
Bayley, a Girl Scout Senior, entered the fair with her project titled Nitrate & Nitrites in our Waterways. She analyzed water samples taken from Homosassa Head Springs and two other locations on the Homosassa River. Both are by-products of fertilizer and animal waste (ammonia) seeping into our groundwater.
Not only did Bayley win the Girl Scout Science Fair with this project she also came in second place at the Environmental Engineering category, senior division of the Citrus County Schools Regional competition.
From there she went off to complete at the State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida. Read along to find out what it’s like to attend the state science fair from a local Girl Scout...
Hi, my name is Bayley. I am a member of Troop #440, which is a Senior/Cadette troop located in Homosassa. I recently participated in the State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida (SSEF) on March 28-30.
I was honored to be chosen as one of the 20 students selected by the judges at the Citrus County Regional Science and Engineering Fair. On Tuesday, we arrived at the Lakeland Center for setup and then we attended the opening ceremonies that evening.
On Wednesday, all students went through a 4 hour judging period. I spoke to 11 different judges about my project, Nitrate and Nitrite in Our Waterways, in which I was competing in the Environmental Engineering category. But it wasn’t all work and now play… On Thursday, we closed our trip off with a field trip to Sea World and the Awards Ceremony at the Lakeland Center. At Sea World, we attended an educational program about Orcas and then we were free to explore the park. I love rollercoasters, and the new 'Mako' is my favorite!
At the Awards Ceremony, I received a $25 award from Lake County Science and Engineering Fair. I was very excited to have earned an award at the State level!
