Girl Scouts of West Central Florida’s council-wide Stop Summer Hunger Take Action day is next Saturday, April 2! What is your troop doing on that day to combat hunger? If you’re not sure, have no fear! Many area service units across our council have been busy planning events and opportunities for you to get involved and support this much needed cause. Check out the full list of events!
Throughout the 2015-2016 program year, local girls, just like you, have stepped up to rally in support of this cause and doing their part to help. In true Girl Scout fashion as a girl-led organization, we asked you to take charge and gee-whiz, have you been busy!
Here’s what our Girl Scout Troops have been up to:
Hosted food drives to support local food pantries
Attended a Feeding Tampa Bay Hunger 101 Session
(Psst! There’s a few more available!)
Volunteered at local food pantries and kitchens
Stuffed backpacks for kids to take home over weekends, breaks and during the summer months
Take Action Event Spotlight
Feeding Tampa Bay has been such a great partner in supporting our Stop Summer Hunger program. They have hosted numerous Hunger 101 Sessions to educate girls about the causes of hunger in our community, offered volunteer opportunities and provided so many great resources. In honor of Take Action Day, Feeding Tampa Bay is hosting a volunteer opportunity for Girl Scouts of all ages at their warehouse distribution center the morning of April 2. Age appropriate volunteer stations will be available which includes sorting food donations, labeling canned goods, cleaning up the warehouse and store.
Date: April 2
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (check-in begins at 9:30 a.m.)
Location: Feeding Tampa Bay - 4702 Transport Drive, Building 6, Tampa, FL 33605
Register: If you would like to attend this event, please register online and complete the waiver form. All volunteers must wear closed toed shoes.
If you can’t make it to Feeding Tampa Bay’s Take Action event – don’t let that stop you! Check out our full list of events happening through our council or get together with girls from your troop and plan your own service project that day!
We’ve got a patch for that!
Show the whole world you did your part to Stop Summer Hunger with a cool new patch for your Girl Scout vest or sash. Simply, complete the requirements described in the Stop Summer Hunger Patch Program. Once completed, leaders will submit the Patch Program Request Form. Patches will be available after Take Action Day on April 2, leaders can stop by the Resource Center to pick them up, or community coordinators will distribute to leaders in May/June.
How are you fighting hunger?
We can’t wait to hear about all the awesome things you and your Girl Scout sisters are doing to combat hunger in your community. Is your troop hosting a food drive? Be proud of what you’ve accomplished and show it off! Stack up all the food together and strike a pose next to it. Submit your photos and story online.
